Why haven't I heard about Marma Therapy before?

Marma Therapy has only recently been rediscovered and therefore usually is not known at all. Marma Therapy is part of Ayurveda, 'The Science of Life' from ancient India, which is many thousands of years old. Ayurveda has been known in the Western world through two main periods of exposure: ancient times through the translation of texts, and the modern era starting in the 1960s and 1970s as part of the growing interest in alternative medicine and Eastern philosophies.

According to many modern Ayurvedic teachings, there are 117 primary Marma points in the body, vital energy centers where muscles, veins, ligaments, bones, and joints meet, serving as gateways for prana (life force) and linking to profound healing, though classical texts like the Sushruta Samhita often mention 107 points, with some interpretations adding the mind as the 108th point. These points are crucial in Ayurveda for holistic healing, similar to acupuncture (more than 70 energy points are identical) but Marma Therapy uses only non-invasive methods like touch and gentle pressure or the tuning fork instead of needles.

A session can be between 60 and 120 minutes, in some cases even longer, but you are in charge of your timeframe and can decide what timeframe is best for you and your schedule.

What do I wear?

Please come in comfortable clothing that is not too heavy in fabric or has thick seams or buttons etc, so it will be easy to locate the Marma points.

What does a session consist of?

All sessions have an opening and a closing sequence. Then there are several different sequences that can be applied according to the individual client's needs. Sequences are worked by applying pressure to the Marma Points using different fingers - the pressure is applied for 20 to 60 seconds on each Marma Point. The Marma Point activation can also be done with a tuning fork. There is a specific tuning fork that is used for the treatments. These tuning forks are tuned to the OM sound (136.1 Hz) and the vibrations of the tuning fork are directly applied to each Marma point. Read more about the use of tuning forks here.

When should I come again?

Usually, if there is an acute condition that needs treatment, it is recommended to have 2 to 3 sessions within 10 to 14 days. The first and second session should be about 3 to 4 days apart, and the third sessions about one week after the second.

Apart from that recommendation, it is completely up to you when you would like to enjoy a Marma Therapy session, either preventative or as a one off session for particular tension or pain relief or even as a regular/irregular relaxation self-care treatment.

What are the key benefits clients get from Marma Therapy that they might not realise?

As a holistic practice, Marma Therapy not only is a form of energy medicine, it also incorporates a spiritual element that truly makes all the difference. You have the opportunity to connect to your soul during deep meditative states of relaxation, and that is the space where the deepest healing can happen. Dr. Vasant Lad describes Marma Therapy as a guided awareness meditation. This means that due to the touch and pressure applied to the Marma points, the client follows these sensations with their awareness and where awareness goes, energy flows, and healing can happen.
